February 2026 – Hot New Web Dev

Welcome to Hot Web Dev February 2026, featuring the latest technology, web development news and articles. This month, we’re introducing an alternative to Electron and Tauri for app packaging. We’re also bringing back a 90s favourite in the scripting world – the tool of the month is an open-source app for managing time.

Electrobun

Electrobun is a solution for building, updating, and shipping cross-platform desktop applications written in Typescript. It uses bun and zig for execution and bundling.

Traditional desktop app frameworks strike a balance between developer experience and app performance. However, Electron has a large bundle size, and Tauri requires Rust knowledge. Native development is more challenging to set up and often platform-independent. For instance, Swift can only be used to build macOS apps.

Electrobun is lightweight. The ultra-small bundles are approximately 14MB compressed, which is over 90% smaller than Electron.  They also offer lightning-fast startup times, with a cold start under 50ms compared to 2-5s for Electron.  Furthermore, they provide small updates via 14KB patches using custom binary diffs, which are significantly smaller than the 100MB+ updates required by Electron.

The bundles are pure TypeScript, allowing you to write TypeScript for both the main process and the UI.  They also support web technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and you can use any frontend framework.  For maximum native performance, they use Zig bindings with the Bun runtime.  An optional Chromium is available for cross-platform consistency when needed.

Learning Resources

There’s a new freeCodeCamp.org YouTube course which teaches cybersecurity fundamentals and ethical hacking using Kali Linux. Learn to identify, exploit, and defend against vulnerabilities with tools like Nmap and Wireshark.

Bookmarklets, also known as favelets or favlets, are saved JavaScript scripts that allow users to perform various actions beyond simply saving web pages. They have been around since the late 90s and remain functional today. If you’re new to them, you’re in for a treat. This in-depth guide to bookmarklets covers everything you need to know, from their practical uses to their limitations.
